When I tie people and photograph them, the story already exists somewhere in my mind. This one began with a long-held idea: a story about the person in the background. They do almost nothing. They simply remain present. Yet without them, everything happening in front of us would be different.

Perhaps all of us are background people at times. We look, remain silent and stay outside someone else’s centre of attention—and still alter the image. The background is not an absence. It is influence without the leading role: a witness, a pressure, a memory, a possibility that changes how the central figure is seen.

The photograph holds both spaces at once. Light isolates the body in the foreground, while the almost invisible observer changes the emotional geometry of the room. What appears secondary becomes the condition that makes the scene possible.
